About this book
Who has the right to a forest when a town begins to claim it?
Winter, 1793. Beside Otsego Lake, Templeton still looks like a clearing in the woods. Judge Marmaduke Temple wants roads, order and law. Natty Bumppo wants to hunt and live as he always has. In James Fenimore Cooper's The Pioneers, farms and sawmills press into land long used by hunters and Native people.
Elizabeth Temple returns from school to a village where loyalty is not simple. Her father holds the legal deed, but the woods hold other claims. Oliver Edwards, a proud young man living with Natty, conceals his identity. As settlement spreads, disputes over land and hunting threaten lives, friendships and a way of living.

From the 15-minute summary · Key idea 1
Templeton is a town carved from forest
The novel opens in the winter of 1793 in Templeton, a village in the hills of central New York. A few years earlier there was nothing here but trees. Now there are streets, a courthouse, an inn, a church and a big stone house above the lake.
The man behind it all is Judge Marmaduke Temple, wealthy, thoughtful and proud of his work. He is based on Cooper's own father. He believes in laws that protect property and in schools and fair markets. Yet he also owns the land on which every other person in the valley stands, and that fact shapes every conflict to come.
