About this book
What happens when a father treats his son as an experiment—and expects a genius?
Avito Carrascal believes science can plan a human life. In Miguel de Unamuno’s Love and Pedagogy, he sets out to arrange the mother, the home, and the lessons that will produce a great thinker. His wife, Marina, sees a child who needs care. Avito sees a project whose success depends on following the method.
Their son, Apolodoro, grows up inside this grand design, with the learned Don Fulgencio Entrambosmares helping shape his education. But when Clarita draws his feelings, the boy faces something his lessons cannot settle. This dark comedy asks what happens to love, fatherhood, and a child’s own life when theory claims to have every answer.

From the 15-minute summary · Key idea 1
A father decides to build a genius
The story begins with Avito Carrascal, a serious young man who has taken in the new sociology of his day. He does not drift through life. He reads, takes notes, and trusts that every problem has a method. When he thinks about having a child, he does not think first of love or of home. He thinks of an experiment.
His aim is bold. He wants to produce a genius, and he believes genius is not a gift of luck but a product of the right conditions. If the parents are chosen well and the child is trained well, he reasons, the result must follow. For Avito this is not a dream. It is a plan with steps, and he is proud of how scientific it sounds.
