By the Library of Alexandria · 4 minute read · Updated 24 Oct 2026

In short

  • The Winter's Tale is a play by William Shakespeare, written around 1610 or 1611 and first printed in the First Folio of 1623.
  • The story moves from the court of Sicilia to the green country of Bohemia, sixteen years later.
  • It follows Leontes, a king whose baseless jealousy tears apart his family and his friendships.
  • The first half is tragic, while the second follows young lovers and the hope of forgiveness.

The plot in six lines

In Sicilia, Leontes wrongly believes Hermione and Polixenes are lovers, orders Camillo to poison his friend, and treats their escape as proof of betrayal.

Leontes imprisons Hermione, who gives birth to a daughter, then rejects the oracle declaring her innocent until terrible news about Mamillius brings him grief and guilt.

Under Leontes' orders, Antigonus leaves the baby Perdita on the coast of Bohemia, where a shepherd finds her and raises her as his daughter.

Sixteen years later, Perdita loves Florizel, but Polixenes forbids their marriage, and Camillo helps the couple escape to Sicilia.

Perdita and Florizel arrive at Leontes' court, where her true birth is discovered and the repentant king finds his lost daughter.

Paulina shows Leontes a statue of Hermione that moves, revealing her alive, and the family reunites, Leontes and Polixenes reconcile, and Paulina is given Camillo as a husband.

Themes

Jealousy: Leontes turns friendliness into evidence of betrayal, showing how suspicion can create its own proof and injure the innocent.

Time and repair: The passage of sixteen years allows Perdita to grow and brings lost relationships towards repair without erasing earlier suffering.

Nature and art: Perdita and Polixenes debate the crossing of flowers, raising questions about whether human skill can mend what nature has broken.

Women's voices: Hermione's dignity and Paulina's courage expose the harm caused when a ruler refuses to listen to women.

Forgiveness: Leontes' continuing sorrow connects the hope of forgiveness with repentance, rather than treating reconciliation as something he can demand.
