Key idea 1
A room serves private interests
When Leiria needs a new parish priest, young Amaro Vieira receives the appointment. Canon Dias, the only person who knows him, quickly suggests a room in Augusta Caminha's house. She takes boarders and has a much-admired daughter, Amélia. The arrangement looks respectable, but the canon has practical reasons for proposing it.
He pays Augusta's bills, so a paying lodger will reduce his expenses. Having a priest under her roof also makes everything look proper. From the beginning, religious respectability shelters private convenience.

Readers who enjoy a big, lively cast, a provincial town seen with a satirical eye, and a love story that is also a portrait of faith, gossip and church politics.
What this book is
A priest with a handsome face and no calling walks into a town that runs on appetite, gossip and favor. The Crime of Father Amaro, by the Portuguese writer Eça de Queirós, is set in Leiria, a small cathedral town. Eça wrote it in the late 1870s as a sharp, often funny study of a church run by hunger and politics. You meet a canon who loves his dinner, a pious widow with a room of saints, and a priest nicknamed the Ferret who holds on to his grudges. Each one is watched with a dry eye.

Key point 1 of 9
A town finds the priest a room
The novel opens at Easter, when the parish priest dies after a fish supper. Hardly anyone mourns him. His little dog wanders the streets and is found dead beside the Misericórdia. That sad scene sets the tone for a town where nobody is quite kind and nobody is quite cruel.
A young priest named Amaro Vieira is appointed. Only Canon Dias knows him, and the canon has a plan. He proposes the home of Augusta Caminha, who takes boarders and has a daughter, Amélia, twenty-two and much admired.
The reasons are not holy. The canon is the close friend of the landlady and pays her bills. A paying lodger eases his purse, and a priest in the house makes everything look proper.
That’s 1 of 9 key points.

Questions about The Crime of Father Amaro
What is The Crime of Father Amaro about?
It follows a young priest named Amaro who is appointed to Leiria and lodges with the Caminha family. He falls in love with the daughter, Amélia, and the novel traces how the town's gossip, church politics and newspaper attacks shape what follows.
Who is Canon Dias?
He is Amaro's former teacher and the cathedral canon who finds him lodgings. He loves good food, supports the Caminha household with money and is the long-time friend of São Joanneira, which makes him partly responsible for the house where the story unfolds.
Is The Crime of Father Amaro a true story?
No, it is a novel. He wrote it in the late 1870s, and it is set in nineteenth-century Leiria.
Why is it called The Crime of Father Amaro?
The title points to the priest's actions in the story, which break his vows and affect those around him. Eça lets you judge how far the real fault lies with Amaro, with his upbringing and with a town that approves of what it should condemn.
Is it a good book to read for its characters?
Yes, the cast is its great strength. Each person has a distinct voice and habits, such as the canon's snuff, Libaninho's gushing and the pharmacist's speeches. Short chapters, funny dinners and card games make the novel inviting from the first pages.
