Key point 1 of 9

A cannon shot sends João to the window

João lives in Angra, on Terceira Island, with his two aunts Pulcheria and Dorotheia. They fill the house with prayers, saints and complaints about the Freemasons. One dawn a gun sounds, and João fears the worst.

From his tower window he watches the frigate Princesa Real sail into the bay. He believes it brings word that Maria, the daughter of the nobleman of Folhadaes, will be sent to Lisbon to marry a cousin. He looks across the fields to her father's estate and feels how the island always waits for news from elsewhere. He longs to act within his own world instead.

The island council refuses to obey Dom Miguel's orders, and the frigate sails away again. João watches beside the castle wall and breathes freely. The relief is short, because the first chapter shows how private fear and public politics are tied together in this book.
