Key point 1 of 7
A cobbler's daughter meets a smooth suitor
The story opens in the Marcús chapel district, where the cobbler Pau, a veteran and a good-humored man, shouts at schoolboys who have dragged his worktable down the road. His daughter Gracieta is sixteen, a very pretty girl, and she sews collars and cuffs at Verdereau's shop.
Each evening a young man named Arturo waits at the shop door and walks her to the corner of Angel Square. He promises to marry her within a year and says he is rich enough to spare her any more labor. Pau is wary and wants the young man to come and see him first.
The narrator shows what Gracieta cannot see. Arturo Bosch dresses like a gentleman, keeps a mistress and stays at a grand hotel under a false name. His father has disinherited him, and no broker can say they ever saw him make a trade. He decides he will have her, whatever it takes.
