By the Library of Alexandria · 2 minute read · Updated 23 Oct 2026

In short

  • Charles Bingley is the rich, friendly young man who rents Netherfield in Jane Austen's Pride and Prejudice.
  • His warmth at a village dance contrasts with the reserve of his close friend, Mr Darcy.
  • He grows close to Jane Bennet, but his friends and sisters have considerable influence over him.

Who Charles Bingley is

Charles Bingley's arrival at Netherfield brings fresh excitement to the Bennets and their neighbours in the English countryside. Mrs Bennet sees the wealthy newcomer as a possible husband for one of her five daughters.

At the Meryton ball, he dances with nearly everyone and asks Jane Bennet to dance twice. His cheerful manners make him easy to like, especially beside Darcy's stiff and distant behaviour.

What Charles Bingley wants

Bingley is delighted by Jane, and the two grow closer as they spend time together. Yet Jane's modest, calm manner makes the strength of her feelings less obvious to others.

Elizabeth recognises her sister's affection but worries that Bingley may not see how deeply Jane cares. Their growing attachment sits within a society where marriage involves money and family expectations as well as affection.

Charles Bingley and the others in the story

Bingley is close to Darcy, but his willingness to follow others leaves him open to influence. His sisters, Caroline Bingley and Mrs Hurst, treat the Bennets coldly beneath their polite manners.

While Bingley welcomes company easily, the people around him judge Jane's family more sharply. This contrast makes his friendliness appealing while raising doubts about how firmly he trusts his own feelings.
