Who Oliver Twist is
Oliver Twist begins life in a workhouse, without family, money or anyone to protect him. He grows up small and pale, but cruelty does not take away his kindness or his stubborn spirit. When hunger drives him to ask for more food, the adults treat his request as a serious offence.
What Oliver Twist wants
Oliver wants the ordinary things denied to him, food, safety and someone who cares about him. He endures bullying, but he fights back when Noah Claypole insults the memory of his mother. After further punishment, he chooses to leave and sets out for London with a small bundle.
Oliver Twist and the others in the story
The Artful Dodger offers Oliver a meal and a bed, then brings him to Fagin's house. Oliver mistakes Fagin's welcome for kindness and does not understand that the boys are learning to steal.
Mr Brownlow offers a different kind of care, taking Oliver into his home when the boy falls ill. These contrasting welcomes show how vulnerable Oliver is, while his horror at theft reveals his wish to remain honest.
A best-known line
“Please, sir, I want some more.”
