A Girl Overhears Her Own Sale

The story begins in the woods near Bellair. Madeline Payne, an orphan raised by a cold stepfather named John Arthur, listens to the city man Lucian Davlin urge her to run away with him. He is leaving for the city the next day, and he wants her answer by evening. She hesitates, and a telegram boy interrupts them before she can reply. Davlin walks off smiling, and the reader sees him mutter about a woman named Cora and about getting family secrets from her old nurse.

Madeline climbs her favorite tree to think. Below her sit her stepfather and a miserly old suitor named Amos Adams. She hears them bargain over her as if she were a parcel. Arthur will hand her over in marriage if Adams tears up an old debt and pays ten thousand dollars. She also learns that her late mother left the Oakley fortune so that Arthur may use it but never sell it, and that it passes to Madeline when he dies.

She goes straight to her old nurse, Hagar, who lives in a cottage across the field. Madeline has worked out the truth already, and she insists on hearing about her mother. Hagar tells how Madeline Harcourt married the brilliant young detective Lionel Payne, known as Payne the Expert. He was shot dead by a fleeing killer when his daughter was six months old.

Hagar goes on to explain how John Arthur, a clerk and false friend, courted the widow and married her once her wealthy uncle died. Her health failed under his selfishness, and she died young. Before her death she left Hagar a package for her daughter, holding her jewels and a tear-stained journal. Madeline reads it and decides her stepfather is her mother's murderer.

That evening she sits down at his supper table with Amos Adams and calmly refuses the marriage. When Arthur rages and insults her mother, she swears she will make him pay for every tear her mother shed. Then she slips out into the dark, leaving both men staring at an empty hall.
