Who Macbeth is

Macbeth begins as a respected soldier serving King Duncan of Scotland alongside his friend and fellow general, Banquo. After helping defeat a rebellion and an invading army, he encounters three witches on a heath. They predict new honours and a crown, and news soon arrives confirming one part of their prophecy.

What Macbeth wants

Macbeth wants to become king, but he recognises the obligations that stand against his ambition. Duncan is his king, his cousin and his guest, and Macbeth acknowledges his gentle rule. His speeches alone reveal a man who can name the reasons for restraint while imagining the power he desires.

Macbeth and the others in the story

Lady Macbeth fears that her husband is too kind to seize the crown and presses him to act. When he tries to abandon their plan, she challenges his courage and persuades him to continue. Banquo offers a different influence, warning that evil powers may tell small truths to lead someone toward harm.

A best-known line

“Is this a dagger which I see before me, the handle toward my hand?”
