Believers speak in their own voices

Manichaean Homilies brings us into the public preaching of the church founded by Mani. These sermons were composed by his followers, who taught and guided their congregations. They show a faith speaking to its own people rather than defending itself before outsiders.

For centuries, Manichaeism was known mostly through the writings of its enemies. Here, the believers explain their own struggle between light and darkness. Their preaching reveals how they understood suffering and how they helped their communities remain faithful.

Who it’s for

For readers curious about early Christianity, Gnosticism and the religions of the ancient Near East, and anyone who wants to explore Manichaeism through its believers’ sermons on light, darkness and spiritual warfare.

What this book is

Manichaean Homilies is a book of sermons from the church founded by the prophet Mani, who lived in the third century in the Persian empire. It survives in manuscripts from several places and in several languages. The sermons belong to the public preaching of Manichaean communities. They were composed by his followers, who offered teaching and guidance to their congregations.

What remains still gives a rare view of Manichaeism from the inside. For centuries, people knew this faith mostly through the writings of its enemies. Here the believers speak for themselves, in the voice of the pulpit. You will hear how they saw the struggle between light and darkness, how they faced suffering, and how they guided their communities. The first key point is the manuscript itself, and how it came to light.

Manuscripts recovered from several places

The Homilies draw on manuscripts from several places. Among the discoveries described in the book is a collection of Coptic texts found at Medinet Madi in Egypt in the late 1920s. The books were written in Coptic, the last stage of the Egyptian language, which Christians in Egypt used for their own scriptures. The Homilies were edited by the scholar Hans Jakob Polotsky in the 1930s.

The volume includes Coptic sources from Egypt alongside texts in Middle Persian, Parthian and Sogdian. That detail matters. It shows that Manichaeism had put down roots in the Nile valley, far from Mani's homeland in Babylonia.

Scholars work across languages to piece together the surviving Manichaean tradition. Any reading of the Homilies has to accept that we hold only part of the original.

Even so, the find changed the study of Manichaeism. Now there was a body of texts in the believers' own words. The Homilies are among the most valuable, because they show how the faith was preached to its members.

The sermons offer teaching and guidance to their congregations in the voice of the pulpit.

Mani was a prophet born in Babylonia in the third century. He taught that he was the last of a line of messengers that included Buddha, Zoroaster and Jesus. He died in Persian custody in the 270s.
