The plot in six lines
Lucy Graham, a governess with no fortune, marries the wealthy Sir Michael Audley and becomes Lady Audley, while saying little about her past.
Robert Audley brings his friend George Talboys to Essex after George returns rich from Australia and hears that his wife has died.
Lady Audley avoids the visitors, George disappears, and Robert begins searching for his friend when no letter arrives.
Robert gathers letters, dates and memories, grows closer to George's sister Clara Talboys, and fears that his discoveries will disgrace his uncle.
As Robert's questions threaten Lady Audley's position, a fire at a village inn increases the danger, and he eventually confronts her with proof.
Lady Audley admits her past and dies in a private asylum in Belgium, George is found alive, Robert marries Clara, and the broken Sir Michael receives gentle care.
Themes

Money and class: Fear of poverty drives Lucy to protect her position, while the Audleys' concern for their name complicates Robert's search.
Madness and control: The uncertain meaning of madness raises questions about illness, responsibility and the power to remove women from society.
Truth and loyalty: Robert's loyalty to George conflicts with his love for Sir Michael, making the pursuit of truth a personal moral struggle.
