In short

  • Snow White is a king's daughter in Grimms' Fairy Tales by Jacob Grimm and Wilhelm Grimm.
  • Her stepmother's magic mirror names Snow White the fairest, turning the queen's vanity into dangerous jealousy.
  • She finds shelter with seven dwarfs, who warn her to admit no one while they are away.

Who Snow White is

Snow White is a young princess whose beauty makes her the target of her stepmother's envy. When she is seven, the queen's magic mirror names her instead of the queen as the fairest in the land.

The queen orders a huntsman to take Snow White into the forest and kill her. He cannot carry out the order and lets the child run into the wild.

What Snow White wants

Snow White needs a safe home beyond the reach of her jealous stepmother. At evening, she reaches a tiny cottage with seven little beds, seven plates and seven cups. The seven dwarfs who live there take her in and ask her to keep the house.

Snow White and the others in the story

The dwarfs work in the mountains digging for ore, leaving Snow White at home while they are away. They tell her to let no one in, a rule that becomes important when the queen learns she is alive.

Her stepmother comes to the cottage in disguise, bringing gifts that conceal danger. Snow White's kind heart leaves her vulnerable, while the queen's envy follows her even into this new shelter.
