Psychic powers form a connected course
William Walker Atkinson, writing as Swami Panchadasi, presents psychic powers as skills that can be studied in stages. He begins with the ordinary senses, moves into telepathy and clairvoyance, and later turns to astral travel, influence and healing. Each lesson prepares the ground for the next.
For Western readers who want evidence, he pairs explanations with reported cases, especially those collected by the Society for Psychical Research in England. Exercises and cautions accompany a central claim: what people call magic may belong within natural law.

What this book is
Clairvoyance and Occult Powers is a course of twenty lessons, written by William Walker Atkinson and issued under the name Swami Panchadasi. It was made for Western students about a century ago. Its author knows that Western readers want proof, so he explains each principle and then backs it with cases from Western sources, above all the reports of the Society for Psychical Research in England.
The course climbs like a ladder. It starts with the ordinary five senses and asks whether more senses could exist. Next come telepathy and simple mind-reading games, then psychometry and crystal gazing. After that the lessons treat clairvoyance of distant scenes, of the past and of the future. The last lessons turn to travel in the astral body, the power of one mind over another, the law of attraction and healing.
You get more than theory. Nearly every lesson ends with exercises, cautions or a plain rule to follow. You also get a worldview in which thought is a set of vibrations and natural law covers much that people call magic. Let us begin where the author does, with a challenge to the person who says he believes only what his senses tell him.

Key point 1 of 9
Your Five Senses Are Not the Whole Story
Lesson one opens by answering a familiar sneer. Some people say they believe only what their senses tell them. The author replies that the senses are poor instruments. Color blindness, optical illusions and the trick of crossing two fingers on a pea all show them failing. Even the sight of a motionless earth with the sun circling it is a false report, corrected only by reason.
He then asks what a sense really is. A sense is a channel by which a person learns about things outside himself. Behind the eye, the ear, the nose and the tongue stands the nervous system, and behind that stands the ego, the real knower. The eye is only a camera and the ear only a receiver of sound. Cut the nerve and the camera still works, but no message reaches the brain.
Touch, he says, came first, and the other senses grew from it. Sight registers the touch of light waves, hearing the touch of air vibrations, smell and taste the chemical touch of fine particles. Each new sense would widen the knower's world. A girl born blind guesses that scarlet must be like the sound of a trumpet, which shows how small a world can be. Imagine a sense for electrical waves, or for thoughts, and the world would grow again.
From this he builds his case for the astral senses. They are counterparts of the five senses, tied to a finer body, and they take in impressions from the astral plane just as the eye takes in light. A trained person can switch between the two sets, like a typist pressing the shift key. Clairvoyance, psychometry and crystal gazing need no journey out of the body. Travel in the astral body is a separate matter, and students are told never to try it without a competent guide.
Is any of this beyond nature? The author says no. A generation earlier, wireless telegraphy and the telephone would have sounded supernatural. He asks you to keep an open mind, because nature has no known limit. Superphysical, he insists, does not mean supernatural. The lesson aims to prepare you, not to demand belief.
That’s 1 of 9 key points.

Questions about Clairvoyance and Occult Powers
What is Clairvoyance and Occult Powers about?
It is a course of twenty lessons on telepathy, mind reading, psychometry, crystal gazing, clairvoyance of distance, past and future, astral travel, psychic influence and healing. Each lesson mixes explanation, case reports and practical exercises.
Who is Swami Panchadasi?
Swami Panchadasi is the name under which William Walker Atkinson issued this course. In the introduction he explains that he arranged the lessons for Western students, who expect proof, instead of the way Indian students are taught.

Most cases come from Western sources of the author's day, especially reports of the Society for Psychical Research in England, along with accounts by Stead, Lang and others. He also adds a few from his own experience.
Does the book give exercises to try?
Yes, many. They include a stepwise mind-reading drill, rhythmic breathing with a partner, crystal gazing, handling old letters, seeing the prana aura around your fingers, concentration practice and seven influence exercises. The tone is clear and encouraging.
