Who is Peter Blood?

By the Library of Alexandria · 2 minute read · Updated 23 Oct 2026

In short

  • Peter Blood is the Irish physician who becomes a buccaneer in Captain Blood by Rafael Sabatini.
  • He treats a wounded rebel out of medical duty, but the authorities condemn his kindness as treason.
  • He wants freedom and a good name, yet escape carries him into a life outside the law.

Who Peter Blood is

Peter Blood begins as a doctor in Bridgwater, where he wants peace rather than any part in England's political struggles. He has already been a soldier and sailor, experiences that matter when his quiet life is taken from him. After he treats a wounded rebel, he is arrested, condemned and transported to Barbados as a slave.

What Peter Blood wants

Blood wants to clear his name and live as a physician and gentleman again. As a buccaneer, he insists on fair treatment, keeps his promises and avoids pointless slaughter. His position tests whether a man branded an outlaw can still act with honor.

Peter Blood and the others in the story

Jeremy Pitt shares Blood's captivity and becomes his trusted lieutenant at sea. Colonel Bishop, the cruel planter who buys Blood, becomes an enemy determined to punish his escape.

Arabella Bishop, the colonel's niece, urges her uncle to buy Blood at the auction. Blood values her good opinion, but she cannot accept his life of plunder.

Questions

Why does Peter Blood become a pirate?

Blood turns to piracy after escaping slavery because the English authorities already treat him as an outlaw. He takes command of fellow escaped convicts rather than seeking a life of cruelty.

How does Peter Blood feel about Arabella Bishop?

Blood cares deeply about Arabella and her judgment of him. He names his ship Arabella as a quiet tribute to her.
