The plot in six lines
In Alexandria, Mark Antony neglects Roman duties for Cleopatra, but news of revolt and Pompey's growing strength forces him to leave Egypt.
In Rome, Antony marries Octavia, the sister of Octavius Caesar, to repair their alliance, although his attachment to Cleopatra threatens this political bargain.
The Roman leaders make a fragile treaty with Pompey, but their alliance weakens, and Antony returns to Cleopatra as Caesar prepares for war.
Against his officers' advice, Antony fights at sea at Actium, where he follows Cleopatra's departing ships and abandons his men, damaging his honour.
As allies desert him, Antony prepares another fight, but Caesar defeats him, and a false report of Cleopatra's death leads him to wound himself before dying in her arms.
Rather than be led in triumph through Rome, Cleopatra ends her own life with a poisonous snake, her women die with her, and Caesar orders a royal burial.
Themes
Love and duty: Antony's attachment to Cleopatra conflicts with his Roman responsibilities, making private feeling inseparable from the struggle for imperial power.
Honour: Rome values discipline and control, while Egypt values pleasure and feeling, exposing Antony and Cleopatra to competing standards of judgement.
Power and loyalty: Political marriages, fragile treaties and deserting allies show how the pursuit of power places personal bonds under pressure.
Fortune and reputation: Antony treats fortune as changeable, while Caesar plans ahead, and both act in a world of constant watching and judgement.
