Key ideas

An Outline of Occult Science · Rudolf Steiner1 of 8
  1. Key idea 1

The hidden world invites systematic study

Rudolf Steiner presents the hidden side of existence as something that trained inner perception can investigate. His aim is to connect human nature, the history of the world and spiritual knowledge within one plan. He writes as a researcher rather than a prophet.

Before turning to spiritual science, Steiner worked on Goethe’s scientific writings and on philosophy. That background helps explain his central ambition here: to approach spiritual questions with the care and order associated with scientific inquiry.

Who it’s for

This book suits readers who love big questions about sleep, death, rebirth and the origin of the human being, and who enjoy a thinker who builds a complete picture of the cosmos.

What this book is

Can a trained mind see what the eye cannot? Rudolf Steiner builds a whole book around that question. An Outline of Occult Science claims that a hidden world stands behind the one our senses show us, and that ordinary people can learn to enter it.

Steiner was an Austrian thinker who had studied physics and philosophy, and he expects sharp criticism. He insists that his claims must face clear thinking and cannot rest on blind belief. You get his picture of the human being, of sleep and death, of rebirth, of the cosmos, and of a training that he says leads to direct knowledge.

Key point 1 of 10

Trained thinking can reach what the senses cannot

Steiner opens with a puzzle. Many careful thinkers say that human knowledge cannot go beyond the senses, and he admits their arguments are strong. He says they show only that ordinary understanding has limits, not that no other kind can be trained.

He offers an analogy. Ordinary sight cannot see the cells of a living body, yet nobody concludes that cells cannot be studied. Instruments and training extend the eye. In the same way, he says, meditation and concentration can strengthen thinking until it grasps what lies behind the visible world.

He wants readers who test every claim against their own reason. Once an investigator has described the hidden facts, any honest thinker can follow them. So the book gives facts before methods, and learning the account is already part of the training.

The first step into the hidden world is honest, careful thinking about what is reported of it.

Questions about An Outline of Occult Science

What is An Outline of Occult Science about?

It describes the human being as made of several layers, follows the soul through sleep, death and rebirth, traces the cosmos from Saturn, Sun and Moon to Earth, and sets out a path of meditation toward higher knowledge.

What does occult science mean in this book?

Steiner uses it for a spiritual science that looks into worlds beyond the senses. He says it must be justified by clear reasoning and tested by experience, and he separates it from vague mysticism and blind faith.

What are Saturn, Sun and Moon in Steiner's book?

They are names for three earlier stages of the world's evolution before Earth, not the planets of today. In them the human physical, life and feeling bodies were formed in turn.

What is the Guardian of the Threshold?

It is a figure the student meets on entering the spiritual world. The lesser guardian shows his own double, with all his faults. The greater guardian urges him to continue and later takes the form of Christ.

Is this book easy to follow?

Steiner explains each step with comparisons, such as sealing wax, a house and its architect, or ice forming from water. He builds from the human being to the cosmos, so each chapter prepares the next.
