Who is Sydney Carton?

By the Library of Alexandria · 2 minute read · Updated 23 Oct 2026

In short

  • Sydney Carton is a gifted London lawyer in A Tale of Two Cities by Charles Dickens.
  • His striking resemblance to Charles Darnay helps undermine the evidence at Darnay's London trial.
  • He loves Lucie Manette without expecting her love in return, and her kindness awakens hope in him.

Who Sydney Carton is

Sydney Carton looks idle and half drunk in court, but he notices what others miss. While Mr Stryver presents Darnay's defence, Carton spots a weakness in the witness's identification. His resemblance to the accused man gives Stryver a way to challenge the evidence.

Carton's intelligence brings him little satisfaction, and Stryver receives credit for his work. He sees his own gifts as wasted and treats himself with bitterness rather than care.

What Sydney Carton wants

Carton loves Lucie Manette, but he tells her he has no right to hope for her love. He asks nothing from her and promises to do anything for her or anyone she loves.

Lucie urges him to use his gifts and believe that his life can change. Although he resists her encouragement, he acknowledges that her kindness lights a spark in him.

Sydney Carton and the others in the story

Darnay's likeness troubles Carton because the two men lead such different lives. After helping him in court, Carton responds coldly to Darnay's thanks and questions his own bitterness.

When Lucie marries Darnay, Carton remains a friend of their family. He visits quietly and plays with their little daughter, keeping a place within the household's circle of affection.
