In Plato's Timaeus, the Demiurge is a benevolent craftsman who creates the world according to eternal patterns, and the world he makes is fundamentally good. The Gnostics took this figure and inverted him. Their Demiurge is not benevolent but arrogant, not wise but ignorant, not a servant of the highest God but a usurper who believes himself to be the only God and who actively works to prevent human beings from discovering the higher reality that transcends his creation. When the Demiurge declares, in the Hebrew Bible, 'I am a jealous God,' the Gnostics heard in that declaration not divine majesty but divine insecurity — the boast of a being who knows, on some level, that there is something greater than himself and who is terrified of that knowledge reaching his creatures.

Into this world of the Demiurge's creation, the supreme God has placed — or perhaps smuggled — a spark of divine light. This spark is the true self of human beings, the pneuma or spirit that transcends the material body and the soul that the Demiurge fashioned. It is because of this divine spark that human beings are capable of gnosis, of awakening to their true nature. And it is because of this divine spark that the archons — the rulers who serve the Demiurge and maintain the order of the material world — are so determined to keep human beings asleep, distracted, and ignorant. The entire structure of the material world, in this view, is designed to prevent awakening. The demands of physical survival, the pleasures and pains of embodied life, the social institutions that enforce conformity and punish questioning — all of these serve, whether intentionally or not, to keep the divine spark imprisoned and unrecognized.

Chapter 1

This is the teaching that Adam handed down to his son Seth in the seven hundredth year. He said to him: Listen carefully, Seth my son, to what I am about to tell you.

Chapter 2

When God had formed me out of the soil, together with Eve your mother, I walked beside her in a splendor she had once beheld in the undying realm from which we descended. She taught me the knowledge of the eternal God. We resembled the great everlasting angels, for we stood higher than the god who had made us and higher than the powers alongside him, beings we had never known before.

In his wrath, God, the ruler of the realms and the powers, divided us. We became two separate beings, and the splendor that had lived in our hearts left Eve your mother and me, along with the primal knowledge that had once breathed within us. That splendor departed from us and passed into another great age and another great people. The knowledge did not come from this present age, the one Eve your mother and I belong to; instead it entered into the offspring of the great eternal beings.

That is why I gave you the name of the one who is the offspring of the great generation, or from whom it springs. When those days had passed, the eternal knowledge of the God of truth withdrew from Eve your mother and me, and from that time on we have known only mortal things, the way all mortals do.

From then on we recognized the god who had made us, for we were no longer unaware of his powers. We served him in fear and submission. And after that, our understanding grew dim.
