Chapter 1

Here begins the letter of the Lord to Thomas.

Listen, Thomas, to the things that must come to pass in the last times. There will be famine and war and earthquakes in many places. Snow and ice and great drought will come, and many conflicts among the peoples — blasphemy, wickedness, envy and villainy, laziness, pride and excess — so that every man will say whatever he pleases. My priests will have no peace among themselves, but will offer sacrifice to me with deceitful hearts; therefore I will not look upon them. Then the priests will watch the people abandon the house of the Lord and turn back to the world.

For there will be great turmoil throughout all the people, and death. The house of the Lord will be left desolate, and its altars will be held in contempt, so that spiders spin their webs across them. The holy place will be defiled, the priesthood corrupted; distress will grow, virtue will be overcome, joy will perish, and gladness will depart. In those days evil will be everywhere: there will be favoritism, hymns will fall silent in the house of the Lord, truth will be no more, greed will flourish among the priests, and an honest man will not be found.

Suddenly, near the last time, a king will arise — a lover of the law — who will not reign for long. He will leave behind two sons. The first is named for the first letter, the second for the eighth. The first will die before the second. After that, two princes will arise to oppress the nations, and under their rule there will be a very great famine in the eastern lands, so that nation will rise against nation and people will be driven out from their own borders.

Then another king will arise, a cunning man, who will order a golden image of Caesar to be made and worshipped in the house of God, and because of this martyrdoms will multiply. Then faith will return to the servants of the Lord, holiness will increase, and distress will grow greater still. The mountains will be comforted and will pour down a sweetness of fire from their faces, until the full number of the saints is complete.

After a short time a king will arise out of the east, a lover of the law, who will cause all good things and all necessities to abound in the house of the Lord. He will show mercy to widows and to the poor, and will command that a royal gift be given to the priests; in his days there will be abundance of all things.

After that, a king will arise in the southern part of the world and will speak with great boldness. Grey hair will be seen on boys, and the young will not yield to the old.

After that will come another king, a cunning man, who will reign for only a short time. In his days there will be every kind of evil, and death will sweep through the race of men from the east all the way to Babylon. And after that, death and famine and the sword will come upon the land of Canaan and reach even to Rome.

Then all the springs and wells will boil over and be turned to blood — to dust and blood. The heavens will be shaken, the stars will fall upon the earth, the sun will be split in two like the moon, and the moon will give no light. There will be great signs and wonders in those days as Antichrist draws near. These are the signs for those who dwell upon the earth. In those days the anguish of a great labor will come upon them.

Woe to those who build, for they will not live in what they have built. Woe to those who break up the fallow ground, for they will labor for nothing. Woe to those who celebrate marriages, for they will bring sons into famine and want. Woe to those who join house to house or field to field, for all of it will be consumed by fire. Woe to those who do not look to themselves while there is still time, for afterward they will be condemned forever. Woe to those who turn away from the poor man when he asks.

For I am the Son of the Most High, the mighty one; I am the Father of all. Know this: I am the Father most high; I am the Father of all spirits.
