Let those who are in favour with their starsOf public honour and proud titles boast,Whilst I, whom fortune of such triumph barsUnlook’d for joy in that I honour most.Great princes’ favourites their fair leaves spreadBut as the marigold at the sun’s eye,And in themselves their pride lies buried,For at a frown they in their glory die.The painful warrior famoused for fight,After a thousand victories once foil’d,Is from the book of honour razed quite,And all the rest forgot for which he toil’d:Then happy I, that love and am belov’d,Where I may not remove nor be remov’d.
Let those blessed by their stars boast of public honors and impressive titles. Fortune denies me such triumphs, but I find unexpected joy in what I value most.
The favorites of great princes spread their lovely petals only as marigolds do in the sun. Their glory carries its own downfall, for one frown kills them at the height of their splendor.
The battle-worn warrior, famous for his fighting, is erased completely from the record of honor after one defeat, even after a thousand victories. Everything else he worked for is forgotten.
So I am happy, loving and being loved, in a love I cannot leave and from which I cannot be removed.
