Jacob set out to go to his uncle Laban. He came to a certain place and, resting his head upon a stone, lay down to sleep there, for the sun had set. And he dreamed. And behold — a ladder stood fixed upon the earth, and its top reached into heaven, and at the very top of the ladder was a face like the face of a man, cut from fire. Twelve steps rose to the summit of the ladder, and on every step, to the right and to the left, stood two human figures — faces and chests — twenty-four faces in all. And the face at the center, the one of fire, rose higher than all the others he saw, with its shoulders and its arms, terrifying beyond measure, more dreadful than all the twenty-four.
