この本について
What happens when the witnesses defend the accused, but the judge fears the crowd?
In The Acts of Pilate, Annas and Caiaphas bring Jesus before Pontius Pilate. According to the text, the charges include sorcery, Sabbath breaking and kingship. Jesus says little. Others speak for him, while Pilate doubts the accusations and searches for a way out.
This anonymous Christian text forms the first part of the Gospel of Nicodemus. It presents itself as proceedings recorded by Nicodemus, though scholars doubt that claim. Its expanded trial narrative explores innocence, testimony and pressure, adding scenes beyond the four Gospels, including Roman standards that bow before Jesus.

A translator presents the court records
The book begins with a note from a man named Ananias. He says he was a praetorian trained in the law. He came to faith through the scriptures and was baptized. Then he went looking for records from the time of Jesus, which the Jewish leaders had deposited with Pontius Pilate.
He says he found them in Hebrew and put them into Greek. A second frame fixes the date by Tiberius, Herod and the consuls, and names Caiaphas as high priest. It says Nicodemus wrote down what follows. So two voices stand behind the text, a Roman lawyer who translates and a Jewish ruler who first wrote.

What is the Acts of Pilate about?
It tells the trial of Jesus before Pontius Pilate as a courtroom drama, with witnesses speaking for the accused, the crucifixion and burial, and the council's struggle to explain what follows.
Is the Acts of Pilate the same as the Gospel of Nicodemus?
The Acts of Pilate is the first part of the work called the Gospel of Nicodemus. Later tradition added a second part about Christ's descent to the dead, and the combined text carries the longer title.
When was the Acts of Pilate written and who wrote it?
The author is unknown. A note in the text names Ananias as translator under the emperor Theodosius. Scholars disagree about the date, and many place the form we have in the fourth or fifth century.
