Wild Animals I Have Known in short

Wild Animals I Have Known gathers eight lives into one argument. Each animal is an individual with a name, a character and a chain of choices. Lobo shows cunning, Silverspot shows a society of crows, Raggylug and the fox cubs show how parents teach, and Bingo, Wully and the Pacer show wild natures meeting human lives.

What Wild Animals I Have Known is about

Picture a wolf that carries three poisoned baits along a trail, stacks them on a fourth, and scatters filth over them. That is Lobo, king of the Currumpaw, and the man he mocks is the author himself.

Ernest Thompson Seton, a naturalist and artist who spent years on the Canadian prairie, published Wild Animals I Have Known in 1898. His claim is bold. A wild animal should be told as a person with a name, a history and a point of view. So he gives you a wolf, a crow, a rabbit, a dog, a fox, a wild stallion, a sheepdog and a partridge. Behind them lies one idea: we and the beasts are kin.

Для кого. Readers who delight in close observation of nature will love this, as will fans of dog, wolf and horse stories told with warmth, wit and a naturalist's insight.

    Lobo rules the Currumpaw ranges

On the Currumpaw cattle range of northern New Mexico, one gray wolf holds more power than any rancher. The Mexican herders call him Lobo, the king. He leads five followers, and a pale female called Blanca is thought to be his mate.

Seton shows the pack by what it does. They kill about a cow a day for five years, and they are choosy. They want young heifers and refuse any meat that died naturally or was killed by stockmen.

The ranchers increase the reward. A Texan named Tannerey comes with fine horses and huge wolfhounds. Lobo leads the chase to rocky canyons, splits the dogs, and turns on the scattered survivors. Tannerey goes home beaten. One hunter, Calone, even has the wolves raise their pups less than a thousand yards from his door.

Real cunning in an animal comes from knowing its own ground and what it fears.

How it ends (spoiler)

The preface calls the stories tragic because they are true, since a wild animal's life always ends tragically. Lobo, caught in four traps, lies silent and dies of a broken spirit beside Blanca. Silverspot is killed by an owl, Raggylug's mother drowns, Bingo dies of poison at his master's door, the Pacer leaps from a cliff to stay free, Wully is killed after attacking his master's daughter, and Redruff is caught in a snare. Vixen frees her last cub with poison.
