Crime and Punishment in short

Crime and Punishment follows one young man from a hungry garret to a deed he planned in secret. Raskolnikov believes that a strong mind may step over the law for a great purpose. The book tests that belief against the real weight of what he does, in fever, in conversation, and in the pull of other people.

What Crime and Punishment is about

What would you do if one idea took hold of your mind and refused to let go? In Crime and Punishment, a penniless student named Raskolnikov walks seven hundred and thirty steps from his rented garret to a pawnbroker's door. He cannot tell whether he is rehearsing a crime or only playing with a thought.

Fyodor Dostoyevsky wrote this novel in Russia in the 1860s, in a Petersburg of heat, dust and taverns. He builds it around a bold question. Can a clever person decide that some lives do not count, and then go on living with that decision? You meet the people who pull Raskolnikov toward others, hear the theory that drives him, and see how Dostoyevsky tells the tale.

Для кого. For readers who love stories that live inside a character's head, enjoy moral questions argued in vivid scenes, and are drawn to feverish nights and cat and mouse talk between a guilty man and a clever investigator.

The story in 10 parts

A student rehearses a plan he fears

The novel opens on a hot July evening in Petersburg. A young man slips out of his garret, taking care to avoid his landlady, whom he owes money. He is Rodion Raskolnikov, a former law student who left the university because he could not pay. He has eaten almost nothing for two days.

He is on his way to rehearse something. He has counted the steps to the door of Alyona Ivanovna, an old moneylender who lends small sums against watches and rings. Today he brings his father's silver watch. While she searches for her keys, he notes where she keeps them.

Back in the street he calls the whole idea loathsome and vile. A glass of beer in a tavern makes him feel better, and he decides it was only weakness from hunger. Yet even he senses that this happy mood is unnatural.

A person who keeps rehearsing a secret plan is already being shaped by it.
