Romeo and Juliet in short
Romeo and Juliet follows two young people from enemy houses who fall in love at a feast, marry in secret with the help of a friar, and then lose control when a street fight ends in death and exile. Their families, who want peace and safety, cannot see them clearly. One adult after another offers a rule, a threat or a risky plan.
What Romeo and Juliet is about
What happens when two children inherit a war they did not start? Romeo and Juliet, written by William Shakespeare in the 1590s for the London stage, asks that question in Verona, where the Montagues and the Capulets hate each other so much that their servants fight over a bitten thumb.
In a few days, a young man named Romeo walks into the house of his enemies, sees a girl called Juliet, and forgets everything else. Love, marriage, a street fight, a banishment and a desperate plan follow. You meet the sharp-tongued Mercutio, the talkative Nurse, the kindly Friar Lawrence and the furious Tybalt.
Для кого. You will love this play if you enjoy young love, family loyalty, bawdy wit, rich imagery, and tales where one rash choice leads to the next.

A feud spills into the streets of Verona
The play opens on a street fight that nobody needed. Two Capulet servants walk through Verona eager to quarrel with anyone from the house of Montague. When two Montague servants appear, Sampson bites his thumb at them, a rude gesture he hedges with careful questions about the law.
The brawl grows fast. Benvolio, a Montague, begs everyone to put away their swords. Then Tybalt, a hot-headed Capulet, arrives and says he hates the word peace as much as he hates hell and all Montagues. Prince Escalus ends it with anger. This is the third brawl, he says, and anyone who breaks the peace again will pay with his life.
Then the play turns to Romeo, Montague's son. He sighs alone before dawn and shuts himself in a dark room. He loves a woman named Rosaline, who has sworn never to love anyone.
Meanwhile Count Paris asks Capulet for the hand of Juliet, who has not yet seen fourteen summers. Capulet asks him to wait, yet invites him to a feast that night. A servant who cannot read asks Romeo to read the guest list, and Romeo sees that Rosaline is on it.
The feud sets the danger, and Romeo's borrowed sorrow leaves him ready for a real love.
