Что такое искусство? in short

Tolstoy's argument runs in a clear line. He begins with the heavy cost of art and asks what justifies it. He shows that theories of beauty cannot answer, because they define art by pleasure.

What Что такое искусство? is about

What do you owe to a painting, a symphony or a poem? Leo Tolstoy begins with newspaper coverage and the costs of art, then describes a conductor abusing performers through a six-hour opera rehearsal. Tolstoy asks who all this effort is for, and whether art deserves such a price in labor and human dignity.

He published What Is Art? in its restored form in 1898, after earlier Russian editions had been mutilated by censorship. He wrote as a novelist who had lost patience with fashionable taste. He gathers the leading theories of beauty, shows how little they agree, and then builds his own answer step by step. You get a simple test you can carry into any theater or gallery.

Для кого. This book suits readers who enjoy a strong argument, anyone curious about why we value music, painting and stories, and people who like testing their taste against a bold thinker.

Art costs far more than we admit

Tolstoy begins with a plain look at what art demands. Newspapers fill columns with reviews. Governments grant millions to academies and theaters. Hundreds of thousands of workers spend their lives serving this one activity.

Then he takes you backstage at an ordinary opera rehearsal. A procession of Indians with tinfoil halberds must be repeated again and again. The conductor shouts that his players are asses and swine, and they take it in silence. One phrase is sung twenty times in six hours.

A village elder scolding a peasant over a badly built haystack at least serves needed work. Here, Tolstoy asks, what is it for, and for whom? If society takes labor, lives and even love to feed art, it must know whether art justifies the sacrifice.

Art may be sacred or harmful, and nobody can decide until they know what it is.

Theories of beauty explain nothing about art

Ask an ordinary person what art is, Tolstoy says, and you hear that art produces beauty.

Вопросы о книге Что такое искусство?

What is What Is Art? by Tolstoy about?

It asks what art is and what it is for. Tolstoy rejects beauty as the aim of art, defines art as the passing of felt emotion between people, and judges art by how clearly it moves people and whether it unites them.

What is Tolstoy's definition of art?

Art is a human activity in which one person, having lived through a feeling, deliberately passes it on by outward signs such as sounds, lines, colors or words, so that others are infected by the same feeling.

Why does Tolstoy criticize Wagner and Beethoven?

He treats them as examples of art made for a narrow circle. He sees Wagner's Ring as a skilled counterfeit of borrowed myth and effects, and Beethoven's late works as unclear, so neither passes feeling to ordinary listeners.

When was What Is Art? written and published?

The restored edition appeared in 1898, after earlier Russian editions had been altered by censorship. The preface explains that earlier Russian editions were cut by censors, and this form restores the author's full text with later additions.

Is What Is Art? worth reading today?

Yes, readers still find value in its bold questions about who pays for art, whether fame proves quality and how feeling reaches us. Its vivid scenes and plain test make it a lively book to argue with.
