Twenty Years After in short

Twenty Years After follows a small group of old soldiers through a dangerous time. Paris is in revolt against a minister who cares more for his purse than his people. A cardinal who has lost control calls on a man he once overlooked, and that man must find the three friends who made him who he was.

What Twenty Years After is about

What happens to four heroes when the world forgets them? Twenty years after the diamond studs, D'Artagnan is a tired lieutenant of musketeers, poor, overlooked and nearly forty. Then the most hated man in Paris sends for him on an evening filled with gunfire.

Twenty Years After is the sequel to The Three Musketeers, written by Alexandre Dumas with his collaborator Auguste Maquet. It is set in France in 1648, when the child king Louis the Fourteenth sits on the throne and Cardinal Mazarin runs the country. You get a chase across France, a prison break, a night flight with a king, and a dangerous mission to England, where a crown is at stake.

Для кого. You will love this book if you enjoy swordplay and sharp wit, loyal friendships tested by rival causes, scheming ministers, daring escapes, and history told through lively characters.

The story in 10 parts

A hated cardinal listens to Paris roar

The book opens in the Palais Royal, where Cardinal Mazarin sits alone. He wears the red robe once worn by Richelieu, but none of Richelieu's power. Outside, gunfire cracks and crowds shout against the Italian who taxes them.

Taxes grind down the poor, and the judges of Parliament unite against him. The crowd cheers for Broussel, a councillor who spoke up. Mazarin then puts on a musketeer's uniform and rides out at night to inspect the guard posts. His escort is Lieutenant d'Artagnan, who pushes his horse straight into angry groups as if he were made of iron.

The ride shows the cardinal how few friends he has. One officer says openly that he would give up his pay to see the king grown. Mazarin returns sure that only the queen stands behind him. He has also noticed the calm Gascon, and he sends him to fetch Rochefort from the Bastille. A hated ruler must borrow the loyalty of men he has never earned.

Characters, plot and themes

Main characters

  • D'Artagnan A clever Gascon lieutenant of musketeers, nearly forty and poor, who wants a captaincy and still trusts his old friends above any master.
  • Athos The Comte de la Fère, a noble and quiet man living near Blois, who raises the boy Raoul and acts only by his sense of honor.
  • Porthos A huge, good-natured and vain gentleman with a fine estate, who longs above all to be made a baron.
  • Aramis The Abbé d'Herblay, a sword-loving priest and secret Frondeur with a taste for intrigue, who hides his real aims.
  • Cardinal Mazarin The Italian first minister of France, a clever and miserly man who is hated in the streets and wants to stay in power.
  • Raoul de Bragelonne Athos's young ward, brave and polite, who wants to prove himself in the army and keeps a tender thought for little Louise.
  • Mordaunt A cold young man with a pale face and a deep grudge, who has sworn to punish the friends for his mother's fate.
  • Anne of Austria The proud queen regent, who relies on Mazarin and wants to save her son's throne from the Fronde.

How it ends (spoiler)

In the last chapters the court returns to Paris and Mazarin keeps his place by paying and promising. The Fronde loses its steam, and Rochefort, leading a street attack on the royal carriage, is struck down by D'Artagnan and dies as his old rival's friend. D'Artagnan wins his captaincy, Porthos his barony, and Aramis his favor. Athos asks for nothing, and the four friends go their separate ways with their friendship intact.

Вопросы о книге Twenty Years After

What is Twenty Years After about?

It follows D'Artagnan and his three musketeer friends two decades after The Three Musketeers. During the French civil war called the Fronde, they are called back by Cardinal Mazarin and are drawn into conflicts that carry them to England.

Do I need to read The Three Musketeers first?

It helps but is not required. The book explains the old story of the queen's diamonds through characters' memories, and it reintroduces each friend as a new person, so you can follow the plot without the first novel.

Who is Mordaunt in Twenty Years After?

Mordaunt is a cold young Englishman with a deep grudge against the four friends. His past is tied to Milady, the villain of the earlier book, and he reappears in key scenes of the story in France and England.

What is the Fronde in the novel?

The Fronde is the name of the revolt against Mazarin and the crown in 1648. It comes from the French word for a sling, which schoolboys used to throw stones, and it describes a movement that is easy to start and hard to control.

Is Twenty Years After based on real history?

Yes, in part. Mazarin, Anne of Austria, the young Louis the Fourteenth, the Prince de Condé, Cromwell and King Charles the First were real, and the Fronde and Battle of Lens happened. The four musketeers and their adventures are invented.
