Торчи и Ви in short

Torchy and Vee is a book of seventeen quick, funny stories told by a red-haired private secretary who cannot stay out of other people's business. What you keep is a lively picture of a busy city near the end of the Great War, and a warm view of people. Torchy guesses wrong sometimes, but he cares, and the stories reward a quick mind joined to a kind heart.

What Торчи и Ви is about

Picture a young man in an army lieutenant's uniform marching down Fifth Avenue ahead of a borrowed drum corps. Behind him, ten soldiers roll five giant spools of telephone wire toward a hotel tea room, where a grumpy major waits to lose a bet. That is Torchy Ballard on an ordinary working day.

Torchy and Vee is a collection of seventeen linked stories by Sewell Ford. Torchy, the red-haired private secretary to Old Hickory Ellins, tells every tale himself, in quick slang. You get small mysteries, mistaken identities and matchmaking, all set in a city busy with war work.

Для кого. You will enjoy this book if you like cheerful city stories, quick talkers, small mysteries with a smile in them, and ordinary people solving problems with nerve and warmth.

The story in 10 parts

Vee turns a neighbor's trouble into a business

Torchy comes home to find Vee worrying about Marion Gray, a neighbor in Harbor Hills. Marion spent years nursing a demanding invalid father, who kept a silver bell on his chair arm. Both parents are gone, the money has shrunk, and the only suitor in sight is Puffy Biggles, a short-winded insurance man.

Then a dinner supplies the answer. The Ellinses' soup is scorched, and every neighbor is complaining about missing cooks, because kitchen hands now earn good pay in munitions plants. Torchy jokes that an army kitchen should roll from door to door, and Vee stops dead in the road.

Her plan is simple. Marion's old family cook, Martha, will prepare the meals, and Marion will deliver them hot by truck. Torchy sends Biggles away with his derby and gloves, and within a week more than forty families are on the list. Marion, once called an old maid, now drives the truck in riding pants and a smart cap.

A clear plan and a little nerve can turn a dead end into a doorway.
