По Финляндии на телегах in short

The book is a ten week summer tour of Finland in 1896, told with humour and warmth. It moves from the capital to country houses, baths, a monastery, a festival, a haunted castle, cart rides and a wild trip down the rapids. At each stop the author eats what the people eat and asks them endless questions, just as they ask her.

What По Финляндии на телегах is about

Picture two Englishwomen stepping off a small ship at Helsingfors on a bright June morning in 1896, with fur coats and thick rugs packed against the northern cold. Their Finnish hostess laughs out loud. The summer is far hotter than England's, she says, and the rugs remain unrolled for none of their three months there.

That joke runs through Through Finland in Carts by Mrs. Alec-Tweedie, first published in 1897. She wrote it after a deep personal loss, and with her sister and a Finnish friend she spent ten weeks travelling to the edge of Lapland and back. You get a lively record of a land few outsiders had seen.

Для кого. Readers who love old travel writing, quirky customs, northern landscapes, folk songs and sauna lore, and anyone curious about Finland before it became independent.

The 7 key ideas

A little known land and a summer island home

The book begins with a gap in knowledge. When the author plans her trip, London offers one small pamphlet and a huge cardboard map. Some friends even ask whether polar bears walk the streets. She decides to go anyway. Her sister and Frau von Lilly, a native of Finland, travel with her.

Her ship takes four and a half days from Hull and winds among countless islands. Wooden stakes mark every channel. Government boats set them out in spring and pull them up in November, because the sea is closed to traffic for about seven months.

Helsingfors greets her with signs in three languages. Little droschky carriages carry passengers for fivepence, and their padded coachmen doze upright on their boxes. She meets the Finnish habit of never hurrying. The word straxt means immediately, yet it stretches to a quarter of an hour or more.

The party then reaches the island of Ilkeäsaari. The house is made of white painted logs and ringed with balconies. Fourteen or twenty family members gather at the father's table, wild strawberries appear three times a day, and mosquitoes torment the strangers.

A week in a private home teaches more than a month in a grand hotel.
