Йомен-авантюрист in short

The Yeoman Adventurer follows Oliver Wheatman from a sulk by a river to the middle of a rebellion. A pike, a stranger and a hidden book set him on a road that carries him through Stafford, to the Prince's council at Derby, and into the retreat north with Highland dragoons. Along the way he gains a friend in Master Freake, a teacher in Colonel Waynflete, and a love he thinks he cannot have.

What Йомен-авантюрист is about

Picture a young man of twenty-three who believes life has passed him by. On a frosty December afternoon, soldiers march past his village, and he spends the hours fishing in a rage. Then a woman on the riverbank asks the way to the smithy, and dragoons gallop toward the bridge.

That is how Oliver Wheatman, a Staffordshire yeoman, steps onto a very strange road. George W. Gough tells it in Oliver's own voice, looking back from years later, and sets it in the Jacobite Rising of 1745. You get night rows, sword fights, disguises, jokes and a love Oliver believes is hopeless.

Для кого. You will enjoy this if you like fast adventure with a warm, teasing voice, a quick-witted heroine, and a young scholar-farmer who talks his way out of trouble.

A Sulking Farmer Lands a Giant Pike

On a December morning, Oliver Wheatman refuses to join his mother and his sister Kate to watch soldiers march by. Among them is Jack Dobson, his old schoolfellow, now a cornet in Lord Brocton's new dragoons. Oliver owns five hundred acres and feels like a cabbage in a field while everyone else marches off to glory.

Kate has hidden his battered Virgil. Stung by her joke, Oliver listens to Joe Braggs, the farmhand, who says a pike as big as a gatepost lies in the river. Oliver grabs his rod and storms off to the bank.

He wades into icy water and plays the pike for half an hour. A woman fishes out his lost gaff with a riding whip and helps him land a monster of over thirty pounds. She quotes Mr. Pope, and he answers with Horace. Her name is Margaret Waynflete. When he mentions dragoons, she goes white and cries out Lord Brocton's name.

A small quarrel and a hidden book can send an ordinary life down an extraordinary road.
