Вендиго in short
The Wendigo follows a hunting party in the northern woods of Canada. A guide named Défago fears a lake called Fifty Island Water and tries to hide the reason. Once he and young Simpson reach it, a song stops, a smell drifts in, a name is called at dawn, and the guide runs into the forest.
What Вендиго is about
Why would a guide who knows every trail in the Canadian bush turn gray at the smell of the wind? In late October, a hunting party camps far north of Rat Portage. One man, a French Canadian named Défago, does not want to go near Fifty Island Water. Nobody will tell the others why.
The Wendigo is a short novel by Algernon Blackwood, remembered for ghost stories set in wild places. It rests on a northern legend of a being that calls a traveler by name and carries him off at terrible speed.
Для кого. Readers who love campfire ghost stories, snowy wildernesses and mounting dread will enjoy this novella and its small cast of characters.

A hunting party of five gathers in the north
The story opens with a joke about the season. That year the moose are shy, and many hunters go home with nothing but excuses. Dr. Cathcart, a Scottish physician who has written a book on Collective Hallucination, goes home with a memory he says is worth more than any trophy.
The party has five members. Cathcart is dry and sure of himself. His nephew Simpson is a divinity student on his first trip to the backwoods. Hank Davis runs the camp. Défago, who guides Simpson, knows the bush wonderfully, sings old voyageur songs and loves the wilderness nearly to obsession.
On the first evening Hank proposes new ground. Défago will take Simpson across the lake by canoe to Fifty Island Water. A look crosses Défago's face that the doctor cannot forget. He seems frightened to the soul. Hank calls it fear of an old fairy tale, and Défago answers hotly. Then Punk, the cook, steps out of the dark, and Hank stops talking.
The first sign of danger in this tale is a silence that nobody explains.

- Dr. Cathcart Simpson's uncle, an Aberdeen physician and writer on Collective Hallucination, who trusts reason and tries to explain every strange event.

- Punk The silent Indigenous cook who keeps the camp, catches fish and senses changes in the wind before anyone else.
How it ends (spoiler)
The search party finds the real Défago lying by the dead ashes of the home camp, shrunken and starved. His mind and memory are gone. He pulls moss from his cheeks, calls himself a moss-eater and complains that his burning feet hurt. They are badly frostbitten. He lives only a few weeks into the winter. Punk, who saw him creeping in and smelled the strange odor ahead of him, fled along the homeward route, sure that Défago had seen the Wendigo.
