Фиолетовая книга сказок in short
The Violet Fairy Book gathers tales from many lands into a single shelf of wonders. Poor boys, clever girls, loyal animals and greedy rulers meet again and again, and the old rules apply. Help the weak, keep your promises, and do not take more than you need.
What Фиолетовая книга сказок is about
Can a clay double take a beating in your place? Can a gazelle bought for a small silver coin win a sultan's daughter for its master? Can a boy with a flute free a giant from the elves who stole his soul? The Violet Fairy Book answers yes to all three, and then keeps going.
Andrew Lang did not invent these old folk tales. Country people told them in Romania, Serbia, Estonia, Japan, East Africa, Russia, Germany, Italy and Portugal long before anyone wrote them down, and his wife translated most of them. You get kings, witches, dragons, talking animals and poor boys who think fast. We start on a haunted moor in Sweden.
Для кого. Readers who love fairy tales, talking animals and clever heroes will feel at home here. So will parents and grandparents who like a story to read aloud.

A Girl Wanders Into the Haunted Tontlawald
The opening tale, A Tale of the Tontlawald, begins on a vast moor in Sweden that nobody dares enter. Travelers speak of a ruined house, ragged crowds around a fire, and a black cat as big as a foal.
Near the moor lives Elsa, a quiet girl beaten every day by her stepmother. While picking strawberries, she hears the cry that the children have reached the Tontlawald. Everyone runs except Elsa, who decides that the people there cannot be worse than her stepmother.
A girl in silk named Kisika leads her to a house of glass and jewels. An old man shapes a clay figure with a drop of Elsa's blood to send home in her place. A golden rooster calls a table full of dishes out of a stone at every meal, yet the thirteenth dish is never touched. The lady calls it the dish of hidden blessings.
In a fairy tale, a rule like the untouched thirteenth dish is always worth remembering.

- Vassili A poor peasant's seventh son whom the rich merchant Mark tries again and again to destroy, though three beggars watch over him.
- Petru The youngest prince, who dares to ask his father why one eye weeps, then rides to find the spring of the Fairy of the Dawn.
- Jem A market boy whose rude words to an old woman cost him seven years and his looks, and who becomes the cook Dwarf Long Nose.
- Jesper A fisherman's youngest son who offers pearls for a princess and helps the King of the Ants on the way.
- Halfman Born from half an apple, he is the smallest of twelve brothers and the one who sees the ogre's trick.
- Stan Bolovan A man who wishes for children, gets a hundred, and must outwit a dragon to feed them.
- The Gazelle A talking animal bought for a small coin that works to make its penniless master a sultan.
How it ends (spoiler)
Most tales close with justice done and a feast. Elsa marries the king's son and the Tontlawald is never seen again. Mark the Rich ends as a ferryman on a river. The lute player's queen throws off her cloak and asks her husband for himself as her reward. Petru cures his father's blindness, and his brothers never return. Jem regains his shape and goes home to his parents. The gazelle, sadly, dies of a bitter heart.

Did Andrew Lang write the stories himself?
