Упанишады in short

The three Upanishads look at one truth from three sides. The Isa says that everything is covered by the Lord, so see the Divine in all and take nothing greedily. The Katha shows a boy who prefers the good to the pleasant and learns from Death that the Self is never born and never dies.

What Упанишады is about

What would you ask Death if he had to answer? In the Katha Upanishad, a boy named Nachiketas does exactly that. He waits three days at the house of Yama, the Ruler of Death, with no food and no water. Yama is so troubled by the neglect that he offers three wishes, and the third is a question nobody has settled.

This book brings together three Upanishads, the Isa, the Katha and the Kena. They are the wisdom portion of the Vedas, the oldest sacred books of India, spoken from teacher to student long before anyone wrote them down. Swami Paramananda, a teacher of Vedanta, offered them to English readers. You get the heart of the matter: the Self within you is one with the Whole, and seeing this ends fear and grief.

Для кого. This book is for readers who love big questions about the self, death and God, who enjoy a wise teacher answering a curious student, and who like to pause over a short saying.

The 8 key ideas

Wisdom was heard near a teacher, not read

The Upanishads are the closing portion of each of the four Vedas. The earlier portions deal with ritual and ceremony. The Upanishads turn to the deeper question of what is real. For this reason they are called Vedanta, which means the end of wisdom.

The word Upanishad is often taken to mean sitting near a teacher. The teaching passed from voice to ear, so the texts are called Sruti, what is heard. They are brief and packed with meaning, and many are dialogues.

Each Upanishad opens with a peace chant. A restless mind cannot take in subtle truth, so teacher and student first quiet themselves. Two great sayings sum up the teaching. One is That thou art. The other is I am Brahman. Brahman is the Supreme, Atman is the Self, and the oneness of the two lies at the root of Vedic thought.

Thoreau wrote that the Vedas fell on him like the light of a higher and purer sun. These are textbooks of God knowledge and Self knowledge, and they ask for attention.

The Upanishads come from a quiet forest, a teacher and a student, and one search for the Self.

Вопросы о книге Упанишады

What is the Upanishads about?

The Upanishads teach that the Self within each person, called Atman, is one with the Supreme, called Brahman. This book gathers the Isa, Katha and Kena Upanishads, which deal with oneness, death and the source of knowing.

What does Upanishad mean?

The word is often taken to mean sitting near a teacher, picturing a seeker approaching a seer in a forest retreat. Another view says it means to shatter the chains of ignorance. Both meanings fit the texts.

Who is Nachiketas in the Katha Upanishad?

Nachiketas is a young boy with deep faith who is sent to Yama, the Ruler of Death, by his father. He waits three days at the door and is granted three boons. His third question is what happens after death.

Who wrote the Upanishads and when?

No author is named in them. They were spoken from teacher to student long before being written, so their date cannot be fixed. Scholars agree they are older than the Buddhist age, which begins in the sixth century before Christ.

What does Aum mean in the Upanishads?

Aum is taken as the fullest name for the Supreme. A is the sound of an open throat, M the sound of closed lips, and U lies between, so together they cover all speech.
