Жуткое in short
He starts with a feeling that the study of beauty ignored. Dictionaries show that the German word for homelike has a second sense of hidden, and that the two meet in the word for uncanny. From there he moves through the Sandman, dolls, doubles, repetition, and the dead, and finds one hidden core in them all.
What Жуткое is about
Have you ever turned a corner in a strange town and found yourself back where you started, with a chill you cannot explain? Sigmund Freud did, on a hot summer afternoon in a small Italian town. He used it to open a door into one of the oddest feelings people know.
That feeling is the uncanny, and his 1919 essay asks where it comes from. Freud argues that it is not the strange or the new. It is something once familiar, pushed out of the mind, and now returning in disguise. You follow him through dictionaries, a dark tale, dolls, doubles, and the dead.
Для кого. You will enjoy this if you love ghost stories, wonder why dolls and doubles give you chills, or like watching a thinker test his own theory.

The uncanny is a neglected corner of fear
Freud begins by admitting that his field has little to say about such feelings. The study of feeling prefers the beautiful and the grand. It pays far less attention to the repellent and the distressing. The uncanny belongs to the family of fear, but it is not the same as every fear.
Yet most of us sense a special shade in it, a fear that comes with strangeness inside something known.
He turns to a paper by E. Jentsch from 1906. Jentsch says the uncanny rises from intellectual uncertainty, from something in which one is not at home. Freud grants a piece of this. New things can easily become frightening, but not all new things are. Something must be added to the new before it turns uncanny.
Freud is frank about himself. He says he is unusually dull to this feeling. So he looks for cases where most readers will agree that the quality is present.
He lays out two roads. One follows the history of the word in language. The other gathers the things and situations that make us shiver and asks what they share. Both lead to the same place: the uncanny goes back to what was once known and familiar.
A feeling that people shrug off as vague can still have a precise shape, and it is worth looking for.

Вопросы о книге Жуткое
What is the uncanny according to Freud?
Freud defines it as a kind of fear that goes back to something long known and familiar. It is a repressed idea or an overcome belief that returns and now feels strange, which is why the familiar can turn frightening.
What does unheimlich mean in German?
Unheimlich is the opposite of heimlich, which means homelike, familiar, and cozy. Heimlich can also mean hidden or secret, so the two words overlap, and unheimlich is used for what is eerie and uneasy.
What is The Sandman story in Freud's essay?
It is a tale by E. T. A. Hoffmann about the student Nathaniel, haunted from childhood by a figure who steals eyes, and about the doll Olimpia. Freud uses it as his main example of the uncanny in literature.
Why does Freud think dolls and doubles are uncanny?
He links dolls to the child's belief that toys live and doubles to early self-love, when a double guarded against death. Once the mind outgrows that stage, the old comfort becomes a source of dread.
Is The Uncanny worth reading today?
Its clear voice and vivid examples make it a short, approachable read. Freud mixes dictionaries, stories, and his own memories, and the essay still shapes how people talk about horror, dolls, doubles, and eerie coincidence.
