Процесс in short
The Trial follows one year in the life of a man arrested for no stated reason. Josef K. begins as a confident bank officer who treats the whole thing as a nuisance.
What Процесс is about
What would you do if two strangers walked into your bedroom on your thirtieth birthday, ate your breakfast, and told you that you were under arrest? They will not say why. That is how The Trial begins. Josef K., a senior clerk at a bank, has done nothing wrong that he knows of.
Franz Kafka left this novel unfinished when he died in 1924, and his friend Max Brod arranged the chapters for publication. It follows one year in K.'s life as he tries to defend himself before an obscure court. You will meet a landlady, a typist, a lawyer in a sickbed, a painter and a priest, and watch a man who laughs at the business come to think of little else.
Для кого. Readers who love psychological mysteries rather than clue puzzles will enjoy this novel. It also suits those drawn to unsettling tales of work, law and ordinary rooms.

Strangers arrest K. at breakfast
K.'s breakfast does not come. An unknown man enters his room in the boardinghouse, and K. learns that he is under arrest. The man is one of two guards, Franz and Willem, who will not say why.
K. reacts as a confident bank officer would. He demands a warrant, shows his papers and asks for someone of higher rank. The guards eat his breakfast and tell him he will learn everything at the proper time. Then the supervisor tells him not to make such a fuss and sends him off to work, since being arrested does not stop a man from living his life.
The arrest is real but has no visible shape. There is no cell and no charge, only a feeling of being watched.
A man can be caught in a system long before he understands that it exists.

How it ends (spoiler)
On the eve of his thirty-first birthday, two pale men in frock coats come to K.'s apartment and lead him out through the city to a quarry. K. no longer resists. In the moonlight they lay him against a stone and pass a butcher's knife over him. He sees a figure at a distant window and raises his hands. One man holds his throat while the other drives the knife into his heart. His last words are 'Like a dog!'

Вопросы о книге Процесс
What is The Trial by Kafka about?
It follows Josef K., a bank officer who is arrested on his thirtieth birthday without being told the charge. He tries to defend himself through lawyers, helpers and speeches, while a vast and hidden court draws him in.
Is The Trial a finished novel?
Kafka left the manuscript unfinished when he died in 1924. His friend Max Brod arranged the chapters and published it afterward, so the order of some middle chapters is an editor's choice.
What does the parable Before the Law mean?
A man waits his whole life at a gate guarded by a doorkeeper, who will not let him in. Priest and K. argue over whether the man is deceived, and the story supports many readings.
Who are the main characters in The Trial?
Josef K. is the accused. Around him are his landlady Frau Grubach, the typist Fräulein Bürstner, the nurse Leni, the lawyer Huld, the painter Titorelli, the merchant Block, and the prison chaplain.
Is The Trial easy to follow?
Yes, the story moves from one clear scene to the next, each set in a room or corridor with a few people talking. Kafka's sentences are plain, and K.'s frustration makes every chapter easy to feel.
