The Three Musketeers in short

The Three Musketeers follows D'Artagnan, a poor Gascon boy who comes to Paris in 1625 to join the king's Musketeers. He loses his letter, makes three enemies in a single morning, and turns them into the closest friends of his life. He wins the king's favour, falls in love with Constance, and risks everything to save the queen from the cardinal's trap.

What The Three Musketeers is about

What happens when a hotheaded eighteen-year-old rides toward Paris on a yellow pony, with fifteen crowns in his pocket and a head full of pride? Within days he is beaten at an inn, robbed of his only letter, and committed to two duels and a meeting to arrange a third.

That is how The Three Musketeers begins. Alexandre Dumas wrote it with his helper Auguste Maquet, and it first appeared in instalments in a Paris newspaper in 1844. It places young D'Artagnan in the France of Louis XIII, Queen Anne, and the cunning Cardinal Richelieu. You get duels, secret letters, stolen diamond studs, a wild ride to London, warm friendships, and some very dark turns.

Для кого. Readers who enjoy swordfights, secret plots, and quick-witted heroes will love this book. It also rewards anyone drawn to friendships built on loyalty and jokes.

The story in 10 parts

A poor Gascon rides north with three gifts

In April 1625, an eighteen-year-old named D'Artagnan leaves his home in Gascony and rides toward Paris. He is lean and sunburned, and his long sword bangs against his horse's side. His father gives him three gifts: fifteen crowns, an aged yellow pony, and a letter for Monsieur de Tréville.

The old man's farewell is short and fierce. Never sell the pony, he says, and never swallow an insult from anyone except the king and the cardinal. Fight whenever the chance comes. His mother adds a recipe for a healing balm and weeps freely at the parting.

The boy takes the advice far too literally. On the road he treats every smile as an insult and every look as a challenge. His hand rests on his sword hilt for days. Dumas draws him with affection and humour, brave and clever but touchy and vain. Courage is all this boy owns, and he is about to spend it freely.
