Шпион in short

The Spy follows the American Revolution in Westchester County, where armies and raiders threaten ordinary families. A British captain slips home in disguise and is caught by Virginia cavalry led by a major who loves his sister. A peddler named Harvey Birch moves between the lines, hated by the Americans and watched by everyone.

What Шпион is about

Picture an October night in 1780, with a cold wind and rain coming on. A tall stranger rides through Westchester County, north of New York City, looking for a safe roof. He calls himself Mr. Harper and says very little. Then a second traveler knocks, wearing a red wig and a patch over one eye.

The Spy is a novel by James Fenimore Cooper, first published in 1821. He built it on a story about a poor, shrewd agent who took on dangerous secret work and would not accept pay. You meet the Wharton family, the peddler Harvey Birch, the Virginia major Peyton Dunwoodie, and a surgeon who longs for tidier wounds.

Для кого. You will enjoy this book if you like war stories that set humor beside danger, or if disguises, secret errands and sudden chases are your idea of good company.

The story in 10 parts

A stormy night brings two strangers to one house

The story opens near the end of 1780 in Westchester County, the country between the British in New York City and the Americans in the hills. A tall rider in a blue cloak searches the dusk for shelter. At a poor farmhouse a woman turns him away and complains that her absent Harvey Birch never comes home. The rider pauses at that name, then goes on to a stone house.

That house belongs to Mr. Wharton, a gentle and anxious man who wants to stay neutral. With him live his sister-in-law and his two daughters, the proud Sarah and the lively Frances. Harper answers every question cautiously. Then a second traveler pounds at the door and is let in. When Harper goes to bed, the newcomer pulls off his wig and patch. He is Henry Wharton, the family's son and a captain in the British army, home in disguise.

Takeaway: in this war, a stranger's silence can be a threat or a shelter.
