Очерки о сэре Роджере де Коверли in short
These papers show one man seen from many sides. Sir Roger de Coverley is generous to servants, quick to forgive, stubborn in his opinions, and unable to forget a beautiful widow. Around him stand the friends of the club, each speaking for a class of English life.
What Очерки о сэре Роджере де Коверли is about
What kind of man talks to the beggar in Gray's Inn Walks, scolds him for idleness, and then hands him sixpence? Meet Sir Roger de Coverley, a Worcestershire baronet of fifty-six, cheerful, generous, a little odd, and the best-loved character in early English prose.
These essays first appeared in The Spectator, a single sheet printed every morning from March 1711. Joseph Addison and Richard Steele wrote most of them, and Eustace Budgell added two. The paper promised to improve manners and morals by making readers smile at their own follies. You follow the silent narrator, Mr. Spectator, from Coverley Hall to the assizes, the hunt and the streets of London.
Для кого. You will love this if you enjoy gentle comedy, vivid characters, and old English country life, or short essays that read like talk with a wise and teasing friend.

A silent watcher founds a paper and a club
The collection opens with Mr. Spectator describing himself. He says readers like to know whether an author is dark or fair, married or single, so he offers his own history with a smile. He spent eight years at university speaking perhaps a hundred words in all. Now he haunts the London coffee houses, listens, and speaks only in his own club. He promises to favour neither Whigs nor Tories.
The second paper, by Steele, introduces that club. First comes Sir Roger, a baronet crossed in love by a beautiful widow, who says his coat has come in and out of fashion twelve times. Then come a law student who prefers the theatre, and Sir Andrew Freeport, a merchant who believes diligence builds nations. Captain Sentry is a modest soldier, and Will Honeycomb is an ageing man about town. A quiet clergyman completes the table.
The paper's whole design is a cheerful mixture of voices, with a silent listener at the centre.

How it ends (spoiler)
Sir Roger dies at home in the country after a few weeks of illness; his butler fears he caught his death while helping a wronged widow at the county sessions. The butler, Edward Biscuit, writes to the Spectator with the news. The knight leaves gifts to the widow he loved, to the chaplain, to his servants, and to the whole parish, and Captain Sentry inherits Coverley Hall. The club mourns him, and Sir Andrew weeps over a book marked in the knight's own hand.
