Государство in short
The Republic asks whether justice is worth having for its own sake. Glaucon and Adeimantus press Socrates to prove that a just person is better off even if he is thought wicked. Socrates answers by building an ideal city and then showing the same pattern in the soul.
What Государство is about
Picture a shepherd who finds a gold ring in a crack in the earth. He turns it, vanishes from sight, walks into the royal palace, and takes the kingdom. Would you stay honest if no one could ever catch you? That question sits at the centre of The Republic, written by Plato in Athens in the fourth century BC.
The book is a conversation led by his teacher Socrates, who is pressed by two sharp young brothers, Glaucon and Adeimantus, to prove that goodness pays. To answer, he builds a whole city on paper and holds it beside the human soul. You get the main arguments in plain terms.
Для кого. This book suits readers who love big questions about how to live, how to govern, and what makes a person good. It rewards anyone curious about politics, education, or the mind.

Justice is not just paying debts or harming enemies
The conversation begins in the house of Cephalus, a wealthy old man who finds age peaceful. Socrates asks him what exactly justice is. Cephalus says it means telling the truth and giving back what you have borrowed.
Socrates answers with a simple case. Suppose a friend leaves you weapons and later asks for them back while out of his mind. Handing them over would be foolish, so the definition fails. Then Polemarchus says justice is doing good to friends and harm to enemies. Socrates shows that harming a person makes him worse, and a just man cannot make anyone more unjust by his justice.
A tidy definition that sounds sensible usually breaks on awkward cases. Socrates shows how to test your beliefs by asking what follows from them.
A definition of justice has to survive the hardest example you can find.

It is a dialogue in which Socrates asks what justice is and whether a just person is happier than an unjust one. To answer, he designs an ideal city, then compares its order with the order of the soul.
What is the allegory of the cave in The Republic?
It is an image in Book Seven of prisoners chained in a cave who see only shadows on a wall. A freed prisoner climbs into the sunlight and sees the real world, standing for the mind's ascent to truth and the good.
