The Prince in short

The Prince argues that power is held by those who see things as they are. Inherited states are easy, new ones are hard, and the new ruler must build foundations early, live near what he conquers, and spot trouble before it grows. Ability and fortune both matter, but he who relies on borrowed strength falls fast.

What The Prince is about

Is it better to be loved or feared? Few questions in political writing have drawn more argument, and the best-known answer comes from a small book by a Florentine official who had lost his post.

Niccolò Machiavelli wrote The Prince around 1513 and sent it to Lorenzo di Piero de' Medici, hoping a ruler would notice how much he knew. In twenty-six chapters, he sorts states into kinds, asks how each is won and held, and tests his rules against men he watched, such as Cesare Borgia. He says plainly that he will follow the truth as it is. Two shorter historical works come with the treatise. You get the whole argument here, one idea at a time.

Для кого. Readers who enjoy incisive political thought, accounts of rulers and battles, and candid advice about leadership and human nature will love this book. It also suits Renaissance history enthusiasts and strategy students.

The 8 key ideas

Inherited states are easy to hold, new ones are not

Machiavelli begins by sorting. Every state is a republic or a principality, and a principality is either hereditary or new. He says at once that an inherited state is the easiest to keep.

A ruler of average ability can hold it by respecting the customs of his ancestors and meeting events with common sense. His people are used to his family, and he has little reason to harm them, so they tend to like him.

New rulers face the opposite. People welcome a change of master, hoping to be better off, and soon find they are worse off. The newcomer must burden them with troops, so he makes enemies of those he injured and cannot satisfy the friends who helped him in.

His case study is Louis XII of France, who took Milan quickly and lost it just as quickly. Louis helped Pope Alexander VI grow in strength. From this Machiavelli draws a rule that rarely fails: whoever makes another powerful ruins himself. Help given to a rising rival is a loan that may be called in against you.

Building up someone stronger than yourself prepares your own fall.
