The Prince and the Pauper in short
The Prince and the Pauper follows two boys who look alike and live in opposite worlds. Tom Canty dreams of palaces, and Edward Tudor dreams of mud and freedom. A swap of clothes sends each into the other's life, and nobody believes the truth either of them tells.
What The Prince and the Pauper is about
What if you could trade places with someone whose life you had only dreamed about? In The Prince and the Pauper, two boys in sixteenth century London do exactly that. One is Tom Canty, born in a filthy alley called Offal Court. The other is Edward Tudor, Prince of Wales, raised in silk and guarded like treasure.
Mark Twain published the book in 1881. He tells it as a legend passed from father to son, and he mixes adventure, comedy and sharp anger at cruel laws. You meet a beggar who reads about kings, a prince who learns what hunger means, and a ragged soldier named Miles Hendon who keeps his word.
Для кого. This book is for readers who enjoy adventure with humor and heart, for anyone curious about Tudor England, and for those who love tales of swapped places and loyal friends.

Two boys are born on one day
The story opens on one autumn day in the sixteenth century, in London. A boy is born to a poor family named Canty, who do not want him. On the same day, a boy is born to the royal house of Tudor, and all England has prayed for him for years.
Years later, Tom lives in Offal Court, a filthy alley near London Bridge. His father John is a thief, and his grandmother is a beggar. They make beggars of the children but fail to make them thieves. One good person lives in the same crowded house, an old priest called Father Andrew. In secret he teaches Tom a little Latin and how to read, and he tells wonderful tales of giants, fairies and splendid princes.
Those tales change Tom more than any beating ever did. One wish grows until it rules him, to see a real prince with his own eyes.
A dream of a better life can shape a child long before life itself changes.
