Философия тайны in short
Astrophel brings ghosts, omens, dreams and trances from the books of every age, and Evelyn answers with the eye, the nerves, the blood and the habits of memory. Again and again he shows that a mystery has a cause close to home, in an idea, a digestion, a shadow, a noise or a belief. He never denies the soul, and he keeps immortality and faith apart from the study of illusions.
What Философия тайны is about
Is a ghost a visitor from the grave, or a picture painted by your own brain? Two friends meet that question on a midsummer night at Tintern Abbey, and neither will give way. Astrophel, a student of old books, says the ghost of Roger Bigod has come to him three times. Evelyn, a physician, says he has seen too many ghosts of his own to be impressed.
The Philosophy of Mystery was written by Walter Cooper Dendy, an English medical writer who died in 1871. He tests tales of ghosts, omens and dreams against what a doctor knows of eyes, blood, nerves and sleep. You get strange stories and a habit of mind: ask what else could cause the marvel before you accept a spirit.
Для кого. Readers who love ghost stories, strange old anecdotes and the history of the mind will enjoy this book, as will anyone curious about how a physician explained the supernatural.

Two friends at Tintern Abbey stage a contest
The book opens in a small boat on the river Wye. Castaly, Ida and Evelyn sail toward Tintern Abbey on a midsummer evening. Their friend Astrophel has gone ahead to walk among the ruins, and the women tease him as a moon-struck student.
Astrophel appears and begs them to tread softly, because this is haunted ground. His argument is plain. Every age and nation has believed in spirits, so so universal a belief must rest on something real. Evelyn answers that a shared belief proves only that human minds are built alike.
Ida asks whether holy people have not believed in visions too. Evelyn agrees, but says that trying to prove too much weakens even honest faith. Castaly turns the quarrel into a contest. Astrophel will tell his marvels, Evelyn will test them, and the ladies will judge.
A strange story deserves a fair hearing and then a fair test.

Вопросы о книге Философия тайны
What is The Philosophy of Mystery about?
It is a conversation among four friends at Tintern Abbey about ghosts, omens, dreams, trances and mesmerism. One believes in spirits, and a physician explains each marvel through the eye, the brain, memory and the power of belief.
Who are Astrophel, Evelyn, Castaly and Ida?
Astrophel is the dreamy student who believes in spirits and prophecy. Evelyn is the physician who seeks natural causes. Castaly and Ida are the two women who judge their contest, with Castaly loving poetry and Ida holding a devout faith.
Does the book say ghosts are real?
Evelyn argues that ghosts are intense ideas, optical effects or products of fear, fever and expectation. He keeps religion and the soul's immortality apart from this, and Astrophel and Ida keep the other side of the question alive.
What kinds of stories does it contain?
It holds tales from Pliny and Plutarch, accounts from Boswell and Byron, Scottish and Welsh omens, and medical cases of sleepwalkers, dreamers and the entranced. Many are short and vivid, so you can enjoy them one at a time.
What is the main message of the book?
Look for the natural cause before you accept a supernatural one. Strange visions, dreams and cures often come from the body, from memory and from belief, and understanding them can add wonder instead of removing it.
