Новый Иерусалим in short

The New Jerusalem is one man's argument, told as a journey. Chesterton says the modern world is lost, and he goes back through Paris, Rome, Egypt and Palestine to find where it took the wrong turn. His answer lies in the Roman and Christian past, a civilisation that had form.

What Новый Иерусалим is about

What would it mean to walk backward through history? In The New Jerusalem, G. K. Chesterton leaves his home in Beaconsfield at Christmas and travels through London, Paris, Rome and Cairo to Jerusalem, as if each city were an older page of one book. He thinks the modern world has lost its way, and the cure is to go back to the signpost where the wrong road began.

The book appeared in 1920, when Britain was taking charge of Palestine. It is a notebook of first impressions that mixes comic scenes with large claims about empire, religion, science and the Crusades. Parts of it on Islam and the Jewish question are one-sided and prejudiced, and a good reader keeps both the vivid scenes and the stereotypes in view.

Для кого. Readers who enjoy travel writing with a strong voice, lovers of history and religion, and anyone curious how an English writer saw Palestine and the Crusades in 1920.

Go backward through history to find your way

Chesterton calls his journey a walk backward through history, like a man who returns to a signpost after taking the wrong road. At his gate he says goodbye to his dog and his donkey, named Trotsky.

London shows him the muddle he wants to understand. Posters call for direct action and nationalisation. Employers praise private enterprise while running giant combines, and strikers demand more power for the very government they fight.

In Paris he sees Liberty dancing on her column, then follows that ideal back to Rome. Roman citizens rioted but did not strike, because slaves did the world's work. Something between the two republics ended slavery and made equality a matter of men, and he decides it came from Christianity. When the present is tangled, retrace the road to where the tangle began.

Вопросы о книге Новый Иерусалим

What is The New Jerusalem by Chesterton about?

It is a travel book and a set of arguments. Chesterton journeys from England to Jerusalem in about 1919 and writes on empire, religion, science and the Crusades. Along the way he gives vivid scenes of Palestine and of the British presence there.

Why is it called The New Jerusalem?

The title refers to the city of peace that tradition promises, and to the Crusader kingdom that Chesterton sees as an early attempt at an ideal commonwealth. The book's opening idea is that to find the new, we sometimes go back to the old.

Is The New Jerusalem easy to read?

It is approachable because it reads like a lively travel diary. The chapters are short scenes with jokes, pictures and clear claims. Its clear opening image, a man walking back to a signpost, helps carry you through the larger arguments.

What does Chesterton say about Zionism and Islam?

He supports a Jewish national home and praises some Muslim virtues, but his views repeat prejudiced ideas about both groups. Modern readers usually treat those passages as a record of attitudes in 1920 and not as reliable description.
