Метод Монтессори in short

Montessori's argument runs in one line. A true science of teaching needs teachers who watch with love, and it needs schools that let children act. From that base she builds a prepared room, short individual lessons, self-correcting materials and exercises in daily life, and from them comes a calm discipline that no prize or punishment can produce.

What Метод Монтессори is about

Picture a five-year-old boy on a sunny Roman rooftop in December. He has never held chalk before. Asked to draw a chimney, he sketches it on the tiles, then cries out that he can write, and spells hand, chimney and roof.

This scene comes from The Montessori Method, written by Maria Montessori and first published in Italian in 1909. She was a physician who had worked with children with intellectual disabilities, and she then tried her methods on ordinary children aged three to six in the Children's Houses of Rome. The book gives you her materials, her reasoning and her stories. Her first idea is about the teacher.

Для кого. This book is for anyone who teaches or raises young children, or who enjoys seeing a bold idea tested in a real classroom.

The 10 key ideas

Teachers must learn the spirit of the scientist

Montessori begins by saying that scientific teaching has not yet been born. Teachers in Italy were trained to take head measurements and use testing instruments. She argues that this confused the study of the child with the education of the child.

What makes a scientist, she asks. It is not skill with a microscope. It is a love for nature's secrets so strong that the researcher forgets lunch and sleep. A teacher needs that devotion, joined to a reverent love for the child.

Even so, a prepared observer is not enough. A naturalist handed butterflies pinned in a glass case learns nothing about flight. Children at fixed desks are the same, mounted and still. The school itself must change so that the child's natural expressions can appear. Watch first, and give the child room to be seen.

  2. 2

Fixed desks and prizes keep children in bondage

Montessori calls the school desk proof that old pedagogy still rests on slavery.

  3. 3

The method grew from work with disabled children

Montessori says her two years in the Children's Houses rest on older work.

The teacher observes and speaks only briefly

Montessori renames the teacher the directress, because she directs life and spirit rather than delivering talks.

Self-correcting materials let the senses educate themselves

Montessori's sensory materials look like laboratory instruments, but their purpose differs.

Writing comes before reading and arrives suddenly

Her writing method began with a girl with disabilities who could not darn until she had practiced weaving.

Вопросы о книге Метод Монтессори

What is The Montessori Method about?

It describes how Maria Montessori taught children aged three to six in the Children's Houses of Rome, with free movement, small furniture, sensory materials and early writing, and it explains the ideas behind each step.

What are the Children's Houses?

They were schools set inside apartment buildings in poor districts of Rome, starting in 1907 at San Lorenzo. Savings on repairs supported them, a directress lived in the building, and a physician watched the children's health.

What does the directress do in the Montessori method?

She observes each child, keeps lessons brief and simple, prepares the room and materials, and steps in only when needed. She stops harmful acts but allows every useful one, so children teach themselves.

Is The Montessori Method easy to read?

Montessori writes in a warm, direct voice and fills the chapters with vivid scenes, such as the boy on the roof and the lesson in silence. The practical chapters on materials and exercises are easy to follow.

What is the main message of The Montessori Method?

Children develop through their own purposeful activity. Give them freedom within a prepared environment, teach them to be independent, and discipline and learning, including writing, will grow from within.
