Лондонские места погребения in short

The London Burial Grounds follows the city's dead from Roman urns and Saxon graves through priory cloisters, great churches, City yards, village churchyards and plague pits. Holmes adds the separate grounds of Dissenters, Quakers, Jews and other foreigners, and the private cemeteries that grew rich on crowded burial. The turning point is the campaign of the surgeon Walker and the Burials Act of 1852.

What Лондонские места погребения is about

Why would a woman climb a rickety fence in Wandsworth just to look over a wall at a graveyard? Isabella M. Holmes did exactly that while hunting for London's burial grounds. Some had become builders' yards, some lay under railways, and some were gone without a trace.

The London Burial Grounds turns her 1895 survey for the London County Council, which counted 362 grounds, into a history. It runs from Roman urns to children's swings, in a plain and often funny voice. You meet plague victims, Quakers, monks and a doctor who fought to close the worst graveyards.

Для кого. This book suits lovers of London history, walkers who like to read the city street by street, and anyone curious about the odd human stories hidden beneath familiar places.

Holmes walks London to find its lost graveyards

Holmes begins with a simple observation. On a map of the 1740s she sees how many burial grounds no longer exist. She makes a table of them, and the project grows into a list of every burial place she can trace.

The records are poor, and she says so. A government report of 1833 claims to list every place of burial, yet clergy reply that they have no return to make. So she walks to each site and asks questions. An old man in a Shoreditch courtyard denies any graveyard stood there, then remembers workmen carting away a ton of bones.

In June 1895 she delivers sixty colour-marked map sheets to the London County Council. She counts 362 grounds, and ninety are now public gardens and playgrounds. Careful looking, done on foot, is how a lost city of the dead is found.

Вопросы о книге Лондонские места погребения

What is The London Burial Grounds about?

It is a history and survey of London's burial places, from Roman cemeteries to plague pits, churchyards, Dissenters' grounds and Victorian cemeteries. It also tells how closed graveyards became public gardens and playgrounds.

Who was Isabella M. Holmes?

She was a London researcher who worked with the Metropolitan Public Gardens Association. In 1895 she surveyed every burial ground in the county for the London County Council, and this book grew from that work.

What was the Disused Burial Grounds Act?

It is a law of 1884 that bans building on closed burial grounds. Holmes argues that it protects old graveyards from builders and keeps them available as open spaces for the public to enjoy.

Is The London Burial Grounds a true account and when was it written?

Yes, it is non-fiction, based on maps, parliamentary reports, old histories, and Holmes's own walks through London. It was written in the middle of the 1890s, and it describes the city as she saw it then.

Is The London Burial Grounds easy to read?

Holmes writes in a lively, conversational voice, full of short scenes, jokes and personal anecdotes. Chapters follow clear themes, so you can read in order or jump to a district, church or plague year.
