A man finds a bottle on a Greenland shore and reads a manuscript by Bowen Tyler, who is sunk by a U-boat he helped build. He rescues Lys La Rue, takes the submarine from its crew, and must hold it together against sabotage and betrayal. The voyage ends at a sealed coast called Caprona, where a hidden river tunnel leads into a crater full of dinosaurs and ape-men.

A message in a bottle opens the tale
The book starts on a rocky beach at Cape Farewell, at the southern tip of Greenland. A man who came north on his doctor's advice sees a quart thermos bottle turning in the surf. He pulls it out and finds a tightly folded manuscript.
He says at once that his own story does not matter, and he hands the page to its writer. The writer has seen a world so old that no rock layer holds a trace of it, and he is trapped there for good.
He is Bowen Tyler, junior partner in his father's shipyard in Santa Monica. He is crossing the Atlantic to join the American ambulance service in France, with his Airedale terrier, Nobs, asleep at his feet. Then three shrill whistles split the afternoon, and a torpedo strikes the unarmed liner.
Tyler sees the attacker surface and knows it at once. It is a boat from his own yard, built under his own eye, and it now hunts the people he sailed with.
A bottle in the surf frames the whole adventure as one man's last message.

How it ends (spoiler)
Lost and alone on the top of the barrier cliffs, Tyler sees a gunshot far below and shoots three beasts attacking a distant figure. It is Lys. He kills her last pursuer, the hatchet man Kho, and she climbs up to his cave. They pledge themselves to each other before God and consider themselves married. With no hope of rescue, Tyler seals the manuscript in the thermos and throws it into the Pacific.
