Коран (аль-Куръан) in short

The Koran, in Sale's edition, comes with a guide and a book. The guide describes Arabia before Muhammad, his life, the faith and the law. The book itself calls its hearers to serve one God, to remember past prophets and to prepare for judgment.

What Коран (аль-Куръан) is about

What do you hold in your hands when you open the book that Muslims treat as the very word of God? This is the Koran in the English edition of George Sale, an English lawyer and scholar of eastern languages, first published in 1734. He placed a Preliminary Discourse before the sacred text, so that a reader could learn who the Arabs were, how Muhammad lived, and what Muslims believe and do.

In the eyes of the faithful the Koran has no human author. It came down to Muhammad through the angel Gabriel over twenty-three years. It has one hundred and fourteen chapters, arranged roughly from the longest to the shortest. You will hear it here in ten steps, from Sale's guide to the closing chapters.

Для кого. This is for readers curious about world religion, lovers of ancient tales of prophets and kings, students of history and law, and anyone who wants to hear what Muslims hold sacred.

Sale's edition opens with a guide

George Sale's edition of 1734 does not begin with the sacred text. It begins with a dedication, an address to the reader and an eight-section Preliminary Discourse. The Discourse works as a handbook to the world behind the Koran. Sale wants English readers to learn what Muslims believe from Muslim sources.

Sale was born in Kent and trained in the law. He learned eastern languages and wrote as a Christian, and he says so plainly. He cites rules for speaking with Muslims that call for no force and no abusive words. His notes draw on Muslim commentators, who tell when and why a verse came down.

For you, every chapter comes with a guide at your shoulder. The notes explain a name, a custom or the story behind a verse. Read the Discourse and the notes as a map that makes the sacred text easier to enter.
