Дом на границе in short
The House on the Borderland is a found diary. Two anglers dig it out of a ruin above a chasm, and an old recluse tells his story in it. He lives with his sister and his dog in a house that stands on the edge of another world.
What Дом на границе is about
Two friends follow a river through western Ireland until it sinks into the ground. A mile on, they find a tangled, abandoned garden, a vast chasm with a waterfall pouring from its side, and a ruin hanging over empty air. In the rubble lies a battered book.
The House on the Borderland was written by William Hope Hodgson, a former sailor who died in the First World War in 1918. It is a work of cosmic horror, offered as the diary of an old recluse. Later writers of weird fiction, among them H. P. Lovecraft, admired it. In one short work you get a haunted house tale, a siege, a love story and a vision of the whole universe. All of it comes from a man who insists he is not mad.
Для кого. You will love this if you enjoy ghost stories, weird tales and old-fashioned dread, if you like a story told as a found diary, or if you are curious about the roots of modern horror.

Two anglers find a ruin above a chasm
The story opens in Kraighten, a tiny village in the west of Ireland, far from any railway. The narrator and his friend Tonnison pitch a tent beside a nameless river. The villagers speak only Irish, and they accept a gift of fish with loud blessings.
For several days the two men fish upstream. On the Sunday they walk the other way, and the river comes to an abrupt end and vanishes into the earth. A mile on, Tonnison spots a column of mist. They climb a boulder-strewn bank and look down on a wooded oasis where spray holds countless rainbows.
The woods are an overgrown, abandoned garden, and the air feels uncanny. Then they hear a harsh, droning roar. It comes from a vast circular chasm with a waterfall bursting from its side. A spur of rock juts out over the abyss, and on its tip hangs a fragment of ruined wall. The two men cross it with their hearts in their mouths.
Tonnison digs out a crumpled, water-stained book packed with neat handwriting. As they leave, a wail floats from the woods, and both men feel watched. Back at the tent, the narrator reads the manuscript aloud, and its title is The House on the Borderland.
The tale begins where a river ends, and a stranger's voice takes over.
