The Great Gatsby in short

The novel follows Nick Carraway through a single summer on Long Island. He meets Gatsby, a man who throws great parties to attract a woman he lost, and he helps bring them together. The reunion is joyful, but it exposes old rivalries, hidden affairs, and the gap between a dream and the person it is built around.

What The Great Gatsby is about

What would you do to win back someone you loved five years ago? Jay Gatsby buys a mansion on Long Island, fills it with strangers every Saturday night, and waits for one face to walk through his gate.

The Great Gatsby, by F. Scott Fitzgerald, appeared in 1925 and is set in the summer of 1922. Nick Carraway, a young bond salesman from the Midwest who rents a small house beside the mansion, tells the story. Fitzgerald lived in the Jazz Age he describes, and he wrote about new money, old money, and the hunger to become someone else. You get the people who drive the story and the ideas beneath it.

Для кого. This is for readers who love a story about longing, glamorous parties, and the cost of a dream. It suits anyone drawn to the Roaring Twenties and to narrators who watch closely.

The story in 10 parts

Nick Carraway moves next door to a mystery

Nick Carraway, a young man from a well-off Midwestern family, comes east in the spring of 1922 to learn the bond business. He rents a weather-beaten bungalow in West Egg, a Long Island village of new money. Beside it stands a huge mansion copied from a French town hall, with a marble pool and more than forty acres of lawn and garden. It belongs to a man named Gatsby, whom Nick has never met.

Nick's father once told him that not everyone has had his advantages. The habit makes Nick a good listener, and strangers pour out their secrets to him. It also makes him a fair witness. Gatsby alone stirs his admiration, even though Gatsby stands for much that Nick scorns.

Across the bay lies East Egg, where older fortunes glitter along the water. West Egg is loud, hopeful, and built overnight. East Egg is quiet, sure of itself, and a little cruel. Nick stands between them, and that position lets him see what both sides hide. A narrator who holds back judgment is the best guide to people who may deserve it.
